And away we go…

I love food.

I love cooking.  I love eating.

When I was little, if someone was in the kitchen, I wanted to be in there with them.  And sometimes I wanted to be in there when they weren’t.  I used to sit at my grandmother’s kitchen table and watch as she moved around her kitchen.  Her cooking wasn’t fancy, and she didn’t use expensive utensils and gadgets.  But with simple ingredients and the barest of tools, she made food that was the stuff of legend within our family.  Some of my favorite comfort foods are ones I picked up in that tiny, drafty kitchen:  beans and cornbread, blackeyed peas, fried potatoes, biscuits, chicken and dumplings, peach cobbler….  I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

For a good portion of my childhood, after my parents divorced, my mother worked graveyard shifts.  During the week, this worked out well, as she could sleep while I was at school.  On the weekends, though, this left a young boy alone to entertain himself for the first chunk of his day.  When I was around 8 years old, I remember I would go into the kitchen and try to cook.  Luckily, I never burned the house down.  I would pull down a cookbook off the counter and attempt a recipe quietly so as not to wake my mother.  I don’t think I was ever successful.  There were a few misunderstandings of ingredients, like reading “1 tsp. soda” to mean a spoonful of Coca-Cola.  These cooking sessions usually ended with a frustrated and tired mother standing in the kitchen doorway, ready to give me hell, because I could have burned her house down while she slept.  I couldn’t understand at the time what the problem was.  I just wanted to cook.

As I got older, I was given more and more freedom in the kitchen.  I started with packaged foods and worked my way along from there.  I learned things by watching anyone when they cooked, from my grandma, from my dad, from my mom.  And, for some reason, I loved cooking shows when I was a kid.  Still do.  I’m just more selective nowadays.  For instance, I’d rather shove an icepick in my eye than endure one segment of any show involving Rachael Ray.  (Yep.  Couldn’t even wait until the first post was done to get in a dig on Yum-O the Cow.)  I learned a lot from them.  As time went on, I picked up more and more, and became a pretty good cook.

Today, one of my favorite places to be is in the kitchen.  I find a zen-like calm there.

With a love of food, and a love of writing, I suppose writing about food is a given.

This site has come together very fast.  I got in the habit, since I cook so much, of posting what I was cooking on Facebook.  From those posts, and friends’ posts about what they were cooking, came the idea of starting a food blog.  Then came an idea for a name (a play on the title of a book by Hunter S. Thompson, one of my favorite writers), and people  offering to contribute.  Then my stepdad surprised me with the domain and the hosting.

My hope is that this site will eventually be filled with recipes, with advice and tips, with little “here’s what I’m having for dinner tonight” posts, and with stories, memories, essays and discussions relating to food.  I want it to stay rather general and free-form, so long as it’s about food.

I’ll be getting some friends of mine set up as contributors in the days and weeks ahead..  I’m hoping to have a nice long roster of contributors soon, to make the site as varied as possible.  Stay tuned, kids!
